Two Mizzou Engineering faculty members have been inducted into an elite organization comprised of 2% of all medical and biological engineers.

The American Institution for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) announced the induction of Shubhra Gangopadhyay, LaPierre Endowed Chair Professor, and Dong Xu, Shumaker Endowed Professor, this week.

Both are faculty in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

“Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to a medical and biological engineer,” said Kamrul Islam, chair of EECS. “Having two faculty members achieve this milestone this year is a success for the entire department.”

Gangopadhyay was nominated, reviewed and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for “advancing nano-engineered materials for shockwave-based cell transfection and sensor platforms for ultrasensitive and single-molecule biomarker detection.”

Gangopadhyay is co-director of the International Center for Nano/Micro Systems and Nanotechnology.

Xu was selected for his “distinguished contributions to bioinformatics and computational biology, and extensive services to University of Missouri and his research community.”

Xu serves as director of the Information Technology program.

Membership to AIMBE’s College of Fellows recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering and medicine research, practice or education, and to those pioneering new and developing fields.

Because of health concerns, AIMBE’s annual meeting and induction ceremony scheduled for earlier this week was canceled. Under special procedures, the induction was held remotely.
