Phosphorylation motif identification

OBJECTIVE

  • With the emergence of large-scale protein phosphorylation site datasets via high-throughput mass spectrometry, it will become important to fully mine the underlying biological significance of these data. One approach is to identify motifs surrounding the phosphorylation sites.

METHOD:

  • We developed a new algorithm for characterizing phosphorylation motif patterns based on hierarchical clustering technique, which integrates the amino acid substitution probability and sequence similarity information.

RESULT:

  • Application of this algorithm to P3DB oilseed rape phosphorylation dataset resulted in identification of dozens of novel and known phosphorylation motifs, which can be downloaded from this link.
